Over 30,000 attendees were present for the Toronto Women's Show, and as usual LILap was there to showcase its commitment to providing the best bariatric surgery experience possible for Canadian patients. Coming to the show with us were several of our patients, some of whom were already over one year out from surgery, and whose weight loss approached 150lbs. We were excited to reveal our plans to bring surgery even closer to the residents of the Toronto area as we prepare our center in Niagara Falls, NY. Operations should begin by December. Stay tuned for photos from our most successful show ever. |

Long Island Laparoscopy introduced its "Obesity Surgery and You" series in Toronto with much excitement. Expert speakers, including the internationally renowned Dr. David A. Jenkins from the University of Toronto, and specialists from New York including pediatric cardiologist and adolescent obesity expert Peter Morelli, MD and bariatric surgeon Matthew R. Brackman, MD gave well received talks. These experts spoke about the dangers of obesity and the treatment options for this rampant disease. Attendees enjoyed lively interactive discussions. Lunch was also provided. Motivational speaker Barry Laub gave empassioned advice on how we can all make the changes to be who we want to be. Conferences in 2007 will be held in Ottawa, Montreal, and again in Toronto. We hope to see you there! |

"Patients in their sixties tell me they wish they had the surgery when they were fifty; those in their fifties that they had it when they were forty, and so on down the line. So the time to act is now, before another decade of organ damage due to obesity accumulates, and one voices a similar regret." Matthew Brackman, MD (LILap) explains that the decision for surgery, although a difficult one, should not be put off. |

"We're the captives of our own civilization...living an abnormal life. We are genetically programmed to eat a large quantity of high fibre food, but our diet consists of low volume, high calorie food. We may therefore have to take radical steps like surgery." David Jenkins, MD, PhD (University of Toronto) referring to the fact that our genetic makeup has not changed in over 10,000 years, but our diet has changed radically, contributing to the epidemic of obesity in developed countries like the U.S. and Canada. |
