As in the United States, Obesity has become the foremost health concern in Bermuda.
This disease, which affects nearly 57 percent of the adult population, leads
to many of the associated medical conditions responsible for death of
Bermudian adults. In fact, Obesity is considered the leading cause of preventable
death in both Bermuda and the United States.
When this obesity becomes severe, diet and exercise are not enough to restore
good health and longevity. Bariatric surgery, however, is highly successful in
allowing one to lose weight, and restore health, longevity, and enjoyment of life.
Bariatric surgery is unfortunately not readily available in Bermuda.
Therefore, many patients travel to the United States for this life saving surgery.
If you are considering surgery, here is some information which hopefully will lead you
to choose Long Island Laparoscopy.

Long Island Laparoscopy will be in Bermuda in 2007 for its
"Obesity Surgery and You" series. Expert speakers, sponsor exhibits, lunch
and more to provide you with every resource while you consider bariatric
surgery with LILap. Contact events@longislandlaparoscopy.com or visit our
International Conference page to see updated information.
We have over eight years experience, thousands of cases under our belts, and excellent
results to boast. We have published literature and presented research on bariatric and
laparoscopic surgery at the foremost conferences nationally and
internationally.
We perform open and laparoscopic roux en Y gastric bypass,
Lap Band, and revisional surgery. Our hospitals have longstanding reputations for
excellent healthcare and offer all of the expected multidisciplinary support for the bariatric surgery
patient.
Bariatric surgery is a major operation even though the laparoscopic approach
involves small incisions, quick recovery, and less pain. This type of surgery
also demands diligent follow up to maximize benefit and minimize complications.
For this reason, we hesitate to offer the surgery to those who cannot
commit to frequent follow up trips.
The average patient would need to plan on staying in New York for one week to ten days.
One would then need to return for visits at 3 months and 9 months at a minimum.
Surgeons with bariatric knowledge should be available near your home
so that the rare dire emergency can be evaluated in a timely fashion. The Bermuda
government or your Major Medical Insurance may provide transfer to our
care in the U.S. in an emergency. Contact your insurer or Ministry of health
to find out the details.
We are available to you 24/7 by page for consultation after surgery.
