In England, the prevalence of obesity has increased steadily during the last 50 years

and since the 1980's  23.6% of men and 23.8% of women are obese (BMI>30kg/m2).

When obesity becomes severe, diet and exercise are not enough to restore good health and longevity.

95 to 99% of those who can loseweight with diet or exercise, simply gain it back.  Bariatric surgery, however,

is highly successful in allowing one to lose weight, and restore health, longevity, and enjoyment of life.

Unfortunately,  access to surgery in the UK is limited.  First you must convince your

General Practitioner that you warrant the surgery.  Surgical criteria

exist, and are similar to those in the United States (BMI> 40, or BMI> 35 with a comorbid illness).

Then you must receive funding, and finally you must be able to get in to see the specialist.

Multidisciplinary bariatric teams are not nearly as common in Britain as they are in the U.S.

Funding for the surgery is often a decision made by persons who do not have the

appropriate understanding of obesity, and that it is just as important as any other life saving operation.

Private surgery  is an option, but again access and fees are obstacles.

If you are considering surgery, here is some information which may help you obtain

surgery in the United States.  Hopefully it will also lead you to choose

Long Island Laparoscopy.

Cost

Long Island Laparoscopy has considerable leverage in reducing costs both at the

hospital, with doctors fees, and with making travel arrangements.  We are unable to

ethically quote costs on the internet, but please contact us to get details.

We are sure we can offer you a relatively affordable option.  In addition,

we offer financial advice to make this life changing event possible.

You will likely find that you can get your surgery at our New York centers, do

some sight seeing, and return home with a few souvenirs, all for less than the private

cost of surgery elsewhere.

Surgeon Experience

We have over eight years experience, thousands of cases under our belts, and excellent

results to boast.  We have published literature and presented research on bariatric and

laparoscopic surgery at the foremost conferences nationally and

internationally.

We perform open and laparoscopic roux en Y gastric bypass,

Lap Band, and revisional surgery.  Our hospitals have longstanding reputations for

excellent healthcare and offer all of the expected multidisciplinary support  for the bariatric surgery

patient.

Follow up Care

Bariatric surgery is a major operation even though the laparoscopic approach

involves small incisions, quick recovery, and less pain.  This type of surgery

also demands diligent follow up to maximize benefit and minimize complications.

For this reason, we hesitate to offer the surgery to those who cannot

commit to frequent follow up trips.

The average patient would need to plan on staying in New York for two weeks.

One would then need to return for visits at 3 months and 9 months.

Surgeons with bariatric knowledge should be available near your home

so that the rare dire emergency can be evaluated in a timely fashion.

We are available to you 24/7 by page for consultation after surgery.
